EXCITING NEW CHANGES COMING TO OUR CITY!
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Developers traveled to Steubenville on Monday and unveiled plans for Phase Two of projects at Franciscan Square.
"To be able to do more development is a great blessing for the community and the university,” Franciscan University President Fr. Dave Pivonka said. “This is an exciting time.
"The second phase will include two new buildings. The first, a multi-story office building. The second, a multi-story building that will be home to restaurants, shops and private residences.
"We're really excited about the mixed use,” said Franco Carapellotti, with Fraspada Company Limited. “You have the restaurant. You have the hotel. You have the retail. And, to just add the residential aspect of it makes it an entirely different new and exciting thing for the area."
Developers want to expand next to the existing space at Franciscan Square.
"We could've gone more down the hill, but it made more sense for us to create a more defined focal point for the entrance to the space and we'll get that now with the office space that will be built right when you come in and the apartment complex and more retail space on the right,” Carapellotti said.
Developers are hoping to create an all-encompassing space.
"You have an opportunity, if you’re someone that is fortunate enough to have an office space here, maybe eventually you could live here, work here, eat here and you don't really have to leave the space,” Carapellotti said.
Some see it having an impact, not only on the university and the city of Steubenville, but also in Jefferson County.
"I think, especially if you do this next phase, those people, students, parents, whomever go back home and they go, one thing cool is the university has a bagel shop, a pizza shop, and whatever else they put in there,’ Jefferson County Commissioner Tony Morelli said.
Though no potential occupants of the space were named, the announcement left everyone optimistic on the path forward.
"Anything that benefits Franciscan benefits Steubenville, and anything that benefits Steubenville benefits Franciscan,” Carapellotti said. “Having that mentality on both sides is very beneficial.”
"There are some other good things happening,” Morelli said. “Some more developers interested in coming to our county and I think things like this snowball.
"Crews are expecting to break ground on this site later this year.
