It's summertime! The weather is hot, sticky and sometimes stormy. Summer brings picnics, family reunions, weddings, baseball and softball games, and county fairs. All of these events bring family and communities together forever strengthening family bonds, building new relationships and continuing community traditions. A county fair is a community’s personality. Each fair is different. They all have similar offerings but the feel will be different. County fairs have long been local county traditions. Each county fair is unique to their resident's talents, their environment's natural resources, and their agricultural strengths.
For those who participate in the county fair, it's work. They raise their animals, grow their produce, make something, or bake. This is a short list of what you will see at the fair. The youth participating belong to local 4-H clubs, a yearly commitment to meetings and community service in addition to completing their projects. Adults participate too. Quilt makers, pie bakers, jam makers and gardeners all come to the county fair displaying their talents. Judges are kept busy passing out ribbons for the best flowers, best photography, best vegetable and many MANY more “bests.” The 4-H youth will show their animals hoping to be judged Grand Champion.
What would a fair be without food, carnival rides, and entertainment? Midways are stacked full of food vendors galore. All types of food from sausage sandwiches to donut burgers! You are instantly hungry with the aromas filling the air. Amongst the vendor’s trailers are the rides. Children are either screaming their enjoyment or disappointment. Of course, the typical games will be played in hopes of winning that tremendously huge stuffed bear! Each night of the fair within the Grandstand or another designated area of the fairgrounds entertainment abounds. You will see musical acts, magicians, rodeos, tractor pulls and monster trucks. Counties often have local traditions with Cheerleading Competitions, Local Talent Shows, and Demolition Derbys.
Our county fairs bring locals together for a celebration of their community with entertainment offerings for everyone. Whether guiding your grandchild onto the kiddy rides or watching your next door neighbor win first prize with her Peach Cobbler or cheering your paperboy on as he shows his hog in the ring, attending the fair is a unique experience that can really bring out the best in our local communities. A few of the local fairs coming up are listed below along with a link to their websites for additional information. Please get out there and enjoy what our surrounding communities have to offer.
