Don’t let mildew on vinyl deter you
You’re driving along the scenic byways of Jefferson County on a Sunday afternoon enjoying the fresh summer breeze in your face when you happen down a tree-lined lane with white picket fences, manicured lawns and overflowing flower boxes looking for that property you saw in this morning’s paper. The homes are all lovely in this neighborhood but there is one green-eyed monster detracting from their beauty. Mildew on siding! This unsightly nuisance rears its’ ugly head in these shaded areas due to the lack of sunlight reaching the house. Don’t be alarmed or dismayed! There is a remedy at hand. Some would choose diluted chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite), a.k.a. your standard household whitener. Although the mildew vanishes, it will come back. That’s because, on porous surfaces such as wood and vinyl, the chlorine evaporates too quickly to get to the fungi’s "roots,” guaranteeing regrowth! That same chlorine will wreak havoc on those beautiful plants you just spent a small fortune on planting also. A better more "green” alternative would be oxygen bleach (hydrogen peroxide). Less volatile than chlorine, it removes mildew on and below the surface – as well as algae, dirt and oxidized paint – but won’t harm plants or clothing. First begin by mixing the powdered oxygen bleach with warm water, stir till dissolved and then apply it generously to dry siding. This allows the solution to soak into the wood and deep clean it. It’s best to work when the siding is in the shade. Allow the solution to fizz and bubble on the siding for about 10 minutes. Scrub with the brush and rinse with clear water. Your siding should look brand new once dry! Oxygen bleach can and will remove sun-damaged wood sealers and stains from the wood. It can absolutely remove sun-damaged and oxidized paint pigments from painted surfaces. If made from scratch isn’t your game, then try Scotts Outdoor Cleaner Plus OxiClean. Don’t let mildew on vinyl deter you from buying that piece of real estate or your dream home. Your determination and the power of oxygen bleach will defeat it every time.
